Short of going for a full-on D-SLR experience, which can be tricky to get the hang of and incredibly expensive to invest in, the Powershot SX20 IS is a sturdy and reliable camera that is often used as a back-up model by professionals.

Neatly designed and with a good handgrip, this 12.1-megapixel model also has 720p HD video capability and an HDMI connection for playback on your high-definition TV.
6.

The 20x zoom lens makes for a super-zoom experience and 12.1-megapixels combined with image stabilisation technology means this is the ideal camera for the budding photographic enthusiast.

There are a myriad of settings so you can go almost-pro if you invest the time but the auto settings and optimised modes mean that the amateur can snap a pretty decent picture too.
