HP on Slate tablet device: 'No sacrifices'
09.03.2010

HP has really thrown down the gauntlet to Apple with the Slate tablet PC. In fact it was more of a glove slap with the gauntlet as HP's Phil McKinney (VP and chief technology officer) promised that the Slate will not cut any corners: "No watered-down internet, no sacrifices."
"With this Slate product, you're getting a full web-browsing experience in the palm of your hand," he added.

The Spongebob Squarepants Flash-based games running on the HP Slate
Could McKinney be having a dig at Apple and the lack of Flash? Could he 'eck: the second of the two shiny new videos on the HP Slate features Adobe's Alan Tam talking about how well Flash and Air will work on the device.
The video goes on to show MTV.com video playback, some Flash gaming with Spongebob Squarepants and image editing through Photoshop.com. All things that the non-Flash enabled iPad will not be able to do.

Flash video embedded on websites such as MTV.com works well on the HP Slate
The video goes on to inform us that more than 85pc of the top Alexa websites use Flash. That's 85pc of the top videos that the iPad will not be able to fully display. Ouch.
As for the e-book capabilities? HP showed the New York Times looking pretty hot on the tablet device and the short video below induces the biggest case of technolust since the arrival of the iPhone.

Pandora's Air-based app running on the HP Slate
The HP Slate runs on Windows 7 with what seems to be a focus on Air-run apps and is available "later this year".
