Leaked images of Microsoft's iPad killer

Despite the Courier having been pitched merely as a concept device last September complete with 3D-rendered video, new images of Microsoft's own lightweight tablet device that would go head to head with the iPad have been circulating on the web, courtesy of Engadget.

In the concept video, created by Pioneer Studios, the user experience of this book-like tablet device with two folding screens was shown to function like a digital journal with both finger touch and pen-based input that seems to be centred around project management for mobile workers, complete with apps, web surfing, and seamless drag-and-drop interactivity between different applications.

Engadget now reports that this device is the real deal and the super-lightweight 'digital journal' runs on the same operating system as the recently announced Windows Phone 7 Series as well as the Zune rather than Windows 7 for laptops and desktop PCs.

The Courier is less than an inch thick, weights less than a pound and has a built-in camera plus headphone jack, making it more like the modern journal 2.0 than the iPad, if reports are to be believed.

Plus, it actually looks more like an e-book device than the iPad, Kindle or Sony Reader and the product images are very promising. Microsoft, however, has said nothing officially about this device.
