Seachtain na Gaeilge: Irish e-book store launch

With Amazon's Kindle, the Sony Reader and the looming iPad, the lure of the e-book is stronger than ever and Litrocht.com - the first online-only Irish-language bookshop - is celebrating the first day of Seachtain na Gaeilge by launching its own e-book section.

Cló Litríocht is a brand new part of Litriocht.com that will follow in the footsteps on Amazon.com and Waterstones by having downloadable e-books for the tech-savvy reader except these will all be as Gaeilge.

As part of this three-month pilot of an Irish-language e-book store, one of Litriocht.com's best-selling authors, Maidhc Dainín Ó Sé, is going to work with the website and some of his best-known books - A thig ná tit orm and Is glas iad na cnoic - will be available to download.

"The e-book market is growing at an increasingly strong pace as the complications are ironed out," said Litriocht.com's owner, Tom Fitzgerald.

"Litriocht.com was the first online-only Irish-language bookshop for Irish-language books and we aim to keep up with the demands of our customers. Litriocht is now selling Irish books into 66 countries and we have an increasingly sophisticated customer base.

"In a recent survey on Litriocht.com, more than 60pc told us they would like e-books in Irish."
