Intel refreshes Classmate with convertible design
02.03.2010

The Classmate, Intel's low-cost laptop aimed at children's education in developing nations, has got a refresh today with some new improvements inside and out, including Intel's own Atom processor powering the unit, as well as a new convertible design.
A tablet device and laptop in one
The convertible Classmate PC joins the existing clamshell model and features an 10.1-inch screen that acts as both a tablet PC and swivels around to turn into a laptop with QWERTY keyboard.
Built to last
The convertible Classmate PC is built to last with a water-resistant keyboard, a built-in handle and the most rugged Classmate chassis yet.
The Atom processor from Intel is built for low power consumption, it has built-in Wi-Fi with options of 3G, GPS and WiMAX.
An e-reader at heart
Interestingly, this Classmate follows the trend of e-book reader and comes with e-reader software included that works with the touchscreen tablet format while supporting mainstream e-book file formats like pdf and ePub.
There is also a palm rest feature to ignore hands resting on the screen when in tablet mode and there is hand recognition and note-taking software on board for students who want to write instead of type.
The Classmate is also designed for multimedia educational purposes and has a built-in rotational camera (with built-in audio) for more natural picture taking, while the 180-degree swivel when it is in laptop mode allows for easier content sharing with other classmates.
